Were you watching Beyoncé reign supreme at the Grammys last night? If so you probably also viewed an interesting new ad from Nike--that is if you paid any attention to the commercials. Nike decided to use its commercial airtime to address racial equality, or better yet the issue of inequality, and used celebrities such as LeBron James and Serena Williams to do so.
In addition to the ad campaign, which also featured Kevin Durant, Gabby Douglas, and various other Black athletes, Nike announced it will donate $5,000,000 to organizations that promote equality.
"EQUALITY is centered on using Nike’s voice and the power of sport to inspire people to take action in their communities, with Nike leading by example with its recently announced partnerships with world-class organizations dedicated to advancing this work," reported The Root.
Shot in black and white, “Equality” was directed by Melina Matsoukas and featuring James, Williams, Douglas, Durant, Megan Rapinoe, Dalilah Muhammad, and Victor Cruz. Actor Michael B. Jordan voices the film and there is also a new performance by Alicia Keys, singing Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.”
The ad will also run during the NBA All-Star Weekend. What do you think?
